CBD: The Basics
CBD is short for cannabidiol and is one of the two main cannabinoids in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD is a naturally-occurring substance used in oils, topical solutions and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. CBD will not cause a high.
THC is the second main cannabinoid in the Cannabis Sativa plant and is what causes a high. In the extraction process, the THC is removed from the extract, so all CBD products contain, at most, only trace (<0.2%) amounts of THC.
CBD has become increasingly popular in recent years as people around the world have discovered the many health benefits this natural alternative can have for them.
Terpenes are another naturally-occurring compound found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. They contribute to the unique taste, smell and color and different terpenes can have therapeutic effects.
CBD and the Endocannabinoid System
CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. This is a complex system in the body that helps to regulate the body’s systems and maintain balance. CBD inhibits the enzymes that are responsible for the breakdown of endocannabinoids, so increases the ability of the receptors in the body to bind to and use important hormones and chemicals, such as serotonin.
CB1 receptors are primarily found in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are mostly in the peripheral organs, especially cells associated with the immune system.
CBD oil is an extract of the cannabis plant and can be taken from either Cannabis Sativa which is low in THC, or Cannabis Indica. For CBD oils made in the US, Cannabis Sativa is used.
Our CBD Oils contain all of the naturally occurring products found in the cannabis plant, including terpenes, essential oils and other cannabinoids. These work together to optimize the effect of the cannabinoids, known as the entourage effect. CBD Oil is best consumed by putting a few drops beneath the tongue, by dropping it into drinks or topically, on the skin.
CBD Oil is blended with carrier oils to make them easier for the body to digest and absorb. We use hemp seed oil as a carrier oil in our CBD Oils and Pastes, primarily for its many health benefits. Hemp seeds are rich in essential fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3 and are considered a superfood.
In our CBD Oils, we use MCT oil. MCT oil (or Medium Chain Triglycerides Oil) has a number of associated health benefits. This oil contains coconut which is rich in essential fatty acids and omegas 3 and 6.
When the CBD is enriched with hemp seed oil and put through a delicate filtration process, it results in a clear, golden extract. Weather conditions and the time of harvest may also affect the color of the final product.
Taking CBD Oil
Using CBD oil is a simple process.
One of the most efficient and common ways to consume CBD oil is by taking it sublingually (under the tongue).
Simply place the drops directly under your tongue, hold for up to one minute to allow the oil to absorb, and then swallow. The tiny capillaries under the tongue emit digestive enzymes and help to absorb substances quickly into the bloodstream without passing through the digestive system.
Another popular method of taking CBD oil is to add the drops directly into your food, or beverages. Some people prefer to infuse CBD oil with essential oils and apply it directly to their skin as a topical.
Just like when trying new foods, you may also start using CBD by taking small amounts, or microdosing throughout your day when beginning to use CBD.
Our CBD Oil bottles include a pipette to allow for easy and practical usage. On the label, you will find the amount of CBD in mg per bottle, as well as a recommended dosage guide in the 'READ ME' booklet included in your order.
When it comes to dosage, each individual may require a different dose of CBD. If you are a beginner and eager to incorporate CBD into your routine, follow the ‘start low and go slow’ approach. This means taking a low dose, being roughly 20-30 mL of CBD daily, throughout your day for the first week, and from there, increasing the dosage until you have attained the desired results. Experienced users might opt for a higher dose.
How does CBD Oil make you feel?
The effectiveness of CBD varies from person to person. The concentration of CBD, metabolism and body weight can all impact how the body responds to CBD. We suggest starting with a smaller dosage and increasing slightly week by week until you feel the effects.
For some people, the effects of the CBD will be felt immediately, but for others, it may take a number of weeks before effects are felt.
In our experience, most people find that the 5% CBD Oil is sufficient for people wanting to relax. For something more, customers tell us that the 15% CBD Oil works best.
The time of day you take CBD will also affect your experience with it. If you take it early in the morning, it will have an energizing effect, whereas if you use it late at night, it will have a calming effect. This is because it works with the endocannabinoid system to maintain balance in the body.
Is CBD Oil safe?
There are many e-commerce brands that promote and sell CBD products. As consumers, it’s important to take time to research, establish trust and ask the necessary questions about product quality. Many CBD brands take shortcuts with their products and are not necessarily safe. You are always best purchasing CBD from companies who can prove that their products go through third party laboratory testing, who have a TDS (Technical Data Sheet) for their products and who have an ISO22000 certification.
At Nordic Oil, we have all of the above. We pride ourselves on delivering only the highest quality CBD to our customers. Whether it’s oils or pastes, capsules or topicals, you can guarantee that all of our products have gone through the very best production methods.
All of our CBD products go through intensive testing to guarantee their quality. We work with experts across Europe who thoroughly review the content of our products alongside our in-house quality assurance team. The certificates of analysis for our products are available to be downloaded online and all of our CBD products meet all US regulations and are regularly tested.
Our customer support team is always on hand to answer any questions you might have about CBD safety.
Is the entourage effect the same as feeling high?
The entourage effect has nothing to do with feeling high. The entourage effect is optimised by the naturally occurring products found in the cannabis plant working together, but THC, which causes the “high” feeling, is always removed during the highly sensitive extraction process, so all CBD products made from the hemp plant contain at most only trace amounts of THC.
Side effects of taking CBD Oil
Very few adverse side effects have been reported from consuming CBD oil. Your ideal dose of CBD may look different from another person, as all people's Endocannabinoid system is different. However, on a case to case basis, individual review and assessment is helpful to guide a dose best suited for you. In rare cases, you may experience dry mouth, mood changes, or drowsiness.
Again, these reactions tend to vary based on age, metabolism, lifestyle, prevailing health conditions and ongoing prescribed medications. For people suffering from long term health conditions, we recommend speaking to a medical professional about incorporating CBD into your wellness routine.
CBD products should not be consumed by pregnant or nursing women. Research is still ongoing in this field and there are as yet no conclusive studies.
