…but what exactly is kush?

Framing the mind

Water, soil, and climate play a very crucial role in determining the flavor, smell, and taste of a plant. Be it a vegetable, or a fruit. The division in the human race and animal species is also because of this simple reason.

According to Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, he classified the human race into five variations in 1779 as Ethiopian, Caucasian, Mongolian, American and Malayan. Keeping aside racial thoughts that divide us, we all belong to the same human species. Just the place that we live, food, and water that we consume, make us different in configuration although our biological system is the same.

This same principle holds good for the food that we eat. For example, a simple bowl of salad made in Europe might have a different taste from the one made in Asia. Even if the same set of ingredients are used. The taste would be different. Why?

The answer is simple. Soil, water, and climate change play an important role in the variety and flavor that mother nature has bestowed upon the earth.

Why the name Kush?

Kush is a strain of Cannabis indica, a specific variety that was selectively bred descending from the Hindu Kush mountains. These mountain ranges are located mainly in Afghanistan, Northern Pakistan, and North-Western India.

The peak of the Hindu Kush mountain ranges from 14,500 and 17,000 ft or even higher that is notoriously known for its harsh weather, heavy snowfall, and blizzards. Although the Hindu Kush range stretches about 966 Km, the mountains that belong to the Hindu Kush region spreads about 600Km while the remaining are smaller mountains.

There is yet another interesting perspective associated with understanding this natural wonder. In the Persian language, the word ‘kush’ means death. The mountain range proudly bears this name because of its dangerous passes, historical significance to the Indian subcontinent, China and Afghanistan, Buddhism, metamorphic rocks including granite, lapis lazuli, gem-grade emeralds, and of course ‘kush’.

More about Kush

Broadly speaking, cultivators segregate Cannabis according to their shape and structure into four major categories, which are indicas, sativas, hybrids, and ruderalis. However, Botanics cannot be restricted to a few varieties, since landrace, modernity, and the hippies made it possible to crossbreed and create new combinations. Hence further categories came to be popular for its explicit flavors, aroma, taste, and geographical region of origin.

Kush, Haze, and Purple are some categories defined under this which own their own individualistic effect.

‘Kush’ is the Cannabis strain that originates from the mountainous ‘Hindu Kush’ region. The nature and fertility of the soil, the hillsides, constitutes to the growth of this cannabis family breed. The United States took this from here in the late 1970s, and British Pharmaceutical companies took the kush strains from here to cultivate them for experimenting with medical cannabis to gain legalized commercial ventures.

Bubba Kush, Purple Kush, Master Kush, Hindu Kush, and Skywalker OG are some more varieties of Kush strains. Their very distinct characteristics and traits make them more notable and these Kush flavors are Grape, Diesel, Citrus, Floral, and Earthy. Some of the popular Kush aromas include Floral, Citrus, Sweet fruit, Pepper, Pungent, Pine, Herbs, etc.

Kush seeds from the Hindu Kush region have significant characteristics. It is an indica or indica-dominant hybrids as indicas are known for its wide leaves, short and bushy structure. They grow faster and also yield better than sativas.

Their flowering time is shorter, shows strong durability to sustain in coldest temperatures, deep green color buds with purple or rust color hair like nodes popping out. They are densely packed, thicker, dominant earthy smells, and a mild flowery taste.

The Pink Kush, contains a sweet smell, smaller in size, dominant flowery taste, and a milder earthy taste.

In contrast, the Sativa variety impressively grows to 20 feet in height and takes a longer time for the buds to mature. Studies report that the “medical benefits of the Sativa strain are very preferable, effective, and could in some cases be safer than some primary pharmaceutical medications”.

The Indica landrace variety exhibits varying levels of THC and CBD. Numerous combinations have been formed mixing one or two on account of the European and American influence on the growth of the plant. And these varieties are cultivated to contain a high percentage of Cannabinoids for medicinal and recreational purposes depending on the demand.

Kush Cannabis strains provide a sedative experience which most informed consumers use it for pain alleviation and relaxation. However, there does exist a knowledge gap in terms of a scientific evidence-based case study to prove the medicinal benefits of Kush for Insomnia, anxiety, and depression. The Kush Indica strains are popular amongst users who seek cannabis for medicinal use as Indicas tend to have higher percentages of CBD, rather than THC.
