CBD for anxiety & anxiety disorders: Studies, experiences & effect

You often have anxiety and want to know if cannabidiol can help against it? We have gone on a search and answered questions.

Anxiety is a primal instinct that can protect us from dangerous situations. A few thousand years ago, when the world was a brutal struggle for survival, the feeling could save us from certain death. Although there are no more dangerous saber-toothed tigers, the instinct is deeply embedded in our brains.

What anxiety is, what forms it takes, how they occur and whether CBD for anxiety can be an alternative treatment method, you will learn in the following article. As usual, we will back up our statements with facts, testimonials and studies, which can be viewed at the end of the article.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is an emotional state characterized by restlessness and worry. There are different gradations of it. Whether it is the fear of spiders or of giving a speech in public. There are usually five types.

The type of anxiety

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Palpitations, tremors, tension Sweating, restlessness, cold & clammy hands Dry mouth, nausea.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Intrusions and flashbacks, reliving and remembering past bad events (trauma) Repressing what happened Nervousness and irritability Loss of interest, avoiding things

Specific phobias

Fear of animals (spiders, birds ...) Fear of blood, seeing injuries and injections

Social anxiety disorder

Fear of addressing a stranger Making a speech (speaking in public) Taking an exam Meeting important deadlines

Panic disorder

Fear of crowds; Being a passenger on an airplane; Riding a bus, train, or car; Wanting to avoid public places; Waiting in line while shopping

When a stimulus reaches the brain, it lands in the thalamus. This is where the messages from all the sensory organs converge. The stimulus is then passed on to the cerebral cortex, where it is processed into conscious images based on past experiences. If there were similar, dangerous situations in the past, alarm signals are sent to the amygdala and solutions are sought at lightning speed. You can learn how CBD can help against anxiety a little further down in the article. What are the symptoms and causes of an anxiety disorder?

Now what happens in detail when we have anxiety?

  • The heartbeat increases because more blood flows through enlarged coronary arteries

  • Blood pressure increases and blood supply in other organs decreases. (focus is concentrated on situation)

  • The body works faster to supply us with oxygen. The metabolism is accelerated

  • The sexual drive does not last in dangerous situations, therefore the blood supply to sexual organs is reduced.

  • Our energy reserves are used to muster strength

  • Cold sweat and an increase in body temperature follow

  • We become nervous, excited and restless, but remain wide awake and stiffen to the situation.

In short, unpleasant consequences that want to be controlled.

What are current treatment methods?

Mild panic attacks can be reduced with relaxation techniques. Severe ones are solved by behavioral therapy and supportively treated with medication. However, psychotropic drugs only help for a short time and have considerable side effects.

However, there are also herbal medications, for the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Herbal substance

calming and anxiety relieving.

Stimulates appetite and helps with nervousness and sleep problems.

Can be calming, but should be taken with valerian and lemon balm for greater effect.

Said to have a calming effect, but research is insufficient.

St. John's wort

May help with mild to moderate depression, according to studies.

Another herbal remedy has gained a lot of popularity lately: CBD. Recent studies suggest a calming effect. Let's now look at the effect in detail.

Effect: How does CBD work against anxiety?

According to a study [1], cannabidiol has a calming and anxiety-reducing effect. It shows that when the active ingredient is taken, the CB1 and CB2 receptors are activated. This reduced anxiety in almost 80% of patients in the first month, and 48 subjects improved their sleep. Cannabidiol showed no effect in only 3 of 72 subjects.

In the second month, anxiety and poor sleep were lowest. In the third month, researchers observed a general flattening, so it is assumed that the maximum effect of the drug was reached.

So, looking at the results as a whole, it is suggested that CBD has a positive effect on anxiety behavior and sleep disturbance in the majority. Other studies confirm this assumption. Side effects also occurred very rarely.

Possible side effects of CBD

Side effects do occur in rare cases. These include:

Loss of appetite

Dry mouth

The side effects usually occur with excessive dosage. Therefore, pay attention to the dosage amounts we give you.

Read our full guide on CBD’s side possible effects and how to deal with them.

Pregnant women should only take CBD with a doctor's permission, as permanent damage can occur. These are anything but proven, but due to the limited research, a risk would not be justifiable.

Can I take CBD in combination with antidepressants?

It is possible to take serotonin reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants) and cannabidiol at the same time, but this should be discussed with a doctor. CBD could interact with existing antidepressants in the body and increase the risk of side effects occurring.

Read here our full guide on CBD’s possible interactions with other medications

Does CBD make you high?

CBD has no psychoactive effect. By EU guidelines, the THC content is a maximum of 0.2%. THC provides a high feeling and can be addictive. CBD can be legally sold and purchased.

What products are there that are suitable for panic?

There are a variety of CBD products. Here are the four most common ones for anxiety:

CBD Liquids

CBD Capsules

CBD Cream

CBD oil is by far the most popular product because it works very quickly. The oils have an active ingredient content of 5%-20%. It is absorbed through the oral mucosa and swallowed after some time. Cannabidiol can be taken permanently or for acute treatment at any time, depending on personal preferences.

How do I properly dose CBD for anxiety, panic & phobias?

While overdosing is almost impossible, it is important to start with a low dose to avoid side effects. If side effects occur, reduce the dose.

If you don't feel any effect, you should take more CBD. According to studies, a low dosage is more successful for anxiety disorders. However, the exact amount varies from person to person. Three times a day, 5-10 drops of a 15% oil should help with mild anxiety attacks. For more severe panic attacks, a 20% oil can be taken.

What do study results & testimonials say?

Based on some studies, clear findings on the topic of CBD for anxiety could be obtained. [2] These results show evidence that cannabidiol reduces anxiety and has its effects on activity in limbic brain areas (in the context of the medical study).

In a study dealing with PTSD, similar findings were found. [3] CBD was able to curb past trauma and negative experiences. [4] Here, cannabidiol was used as a substitute for antipsychotics and the subjects' anxiety levels (schizophrenia) decreased.

While these studies do not conclusively prove the effects of CBD over Anxiety, they pave the way for more, much needed research.

Moreover, the Internet is full of positive testimonials.

Nonetheless, you should always consult with a medical professional, before taking CBD in relation to any medical condition.

What should I look for before buying?

As a beginner, you should start with 5 or 10% oils and pay attention to the quality, because the market houses many high-quality products as well as inferior ones (unfortunately!!!). For anxiety, full spectrum extracts are useful. They have additional vitamins and amino acids. With us you will find the corresponding products of course in the very highest quality.

Summary of CBD against anxiety

CBD is safe to consume. Some studies (on both animals and humans) point to it as a natural alternative to alleviate anxiety, panic attacks and anxiety disorders. Long-term studies will follow in the future to provide even more clarity and new insights.
