What is Lassi?

Lassi Is a fermented milk beverage that has gained quite a bit of popularity in recent years. Fermenting milk isn’t a new practice, however, and people throughout the globe have been adding live cultures to milk for thousands of years. In fact, there is evidence that humanity has been fermenting milk since 10,000 BC. Fermentation prolonged the shelflife of milk and prevented the spread of food born illness. Yogurts, skyr, laban, ayran, and kefir are just a few of these fermented delicacies that have enriched the lives of their consumers and the cultures that created them. Lassi is the lucky beverage though to earn my focus today.
India is the proud birthplace of Lassi. This tangy beverage is made from a semi-solid ferment known as Dahi. Dahi is a cultured dairy product very similar to what you may know as yogurt. Lassi is made with Dahi blended with water, optionally fruits, and spices. There are multiple popular variants of Lssi enjoyed throughout the world. Some enjoy their lassi sweet and tangy such as a mango lassi, while others enjoy a more savory-salty experience such as “sambharam” which employs curry, cilantro, green chiles, and other spices to excite the palette.
Not only confined to the Indian subcontinent, but lassi has also seen a huge boost in popularity in the western world in recent years. You can find pre-made lassi drinks at health food stores or you can pick up a cold lassi on a hot day at many coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s enduring popularity and universal appeal stems from its undeniable deliciousness.
Historically Lassi is made from fermented dairy. Modern cultured non-dairy yogurts such as cashew yogurt or soy yogurt have made the lassi accessible to the Vegan market.
Health Benefits of Lassi
Since Lassi is a yogurt beverage very similar to kefir, lassi is also full of probiotics. Drinking lassi aids in your digestion as well as cuts back on bloating. Being exceptionally high in calcium, lassi is also good for your bones. Some have also speculated with good reason that lassi also boosts your immune system.

Mango Lassi (and CBD)
There is no doubt that the most popular and iconic variety of the lassi is of the mango variety. Mango Lassi balances its tangy creamy body with sweet and tropical fruit. The addition of mango not only creates tasty results but also adds added health benefits. This superfruit is packed full of vitamins and minerals. They are great for your guts and digestive system, beneficial to your eyes and extremely helpful to your skin and hair. These superfruits add that extra punch to an already healthy and delicious drink.
Mango lassi is typically made with mango pulp, Dahi or yogurt, and dairy or nut milk. Delicious on a hot day or served as an after diner treat, mango lassi tickles the taste buds of even the hardest to impress.
One popular presentation of the mango lassi is with the addition of CBD. As if it wasn’t already packed full of health benefits, the addition of CBD provides extra an extra boost.
CBD oil or CBD distillate can be added to an already made lassi or during the blending process for an added medicinal kick. 6 or 7 drops of CBD oil or tincture or 20 or 30 milligrams of distillate powder are sure to give your lassi the added oomph that you need.
Recipe: CBD Mango Lassi
Lassi comes in all kinds of flavors. Some of them are salty, some sweet, and you can use a variety of having fruit. My personal favorite flavor is mango and for this recipe, you can use either canned mango pulp or cubed fresh or frozen mango. If you use fresh mangoes, be sure to choose a ripe, sweet mango. If your mango isn’t ripe enough it will be sour but you can also add honey for extra sweetness. I like to add a bit of ground cardamom on top but this is optional.
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup chopped very ripe mango, frozen chopped mango, or a cup of canned mango pulp
- 4 teaspoons honey (optional depending on how sweet your mango is)
- ½ tsp. CBD oil
- a dash of ground cardamom (optional)
- Ice (optional)
Put mango, yogurt, milk, honey, and cardamom into a blender and blend for 2 minutes.
If you want a more milkshake consistency and it’s a hot day, either blend in some ice as well or serves over ice cubes.
Sprinkle with a tiny pinch of ground cardamom to serve.
The lassi can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
